Niagara Falls in a Half-Day
A 4–6 hour itinerary covering both the U.S. and Canadian sides
This plan gets you the iconic views and one signature experience on each side of the falls, without rushing. It assumes you're starting near Niagara Falls, New York, and are comfortable with a short international border crossing on foot.

Niagara Falls State Park — Prospect Point & Goat Island ↗
Start on the American side. Park at the State Park lot and walk out to Prospect Point for your first close-up view of the American Falls, then continue across the footbridge to Goat Island and Luna Island for views of Bridal Veil Falls and the top of Horseshoe Falls. This loop is free and takes about 45–60 minutes.
Parking: $10 (weekdays) / $15 (Fri–Sun) at State Park lots. No advance booking needed — free, walk-in access.
Maid of the Mist Boat Ride ↗
Board the boat that takes you right up to the base of the falls (ponchos provided — you will get misted). Visitors average 40–60 minutes here including the walk down and queue, with the ride itself lasting about 30 minutes. Book online in advance if visiting in summer to skip the line.
Cost: $30.25 adult / $19.75 child (6–12), USD.

Walking across takes about 5 minutes plus a small toll, versus roughly 30 minutes by car once you include customs — so on a short visit, park your car and walk. The pedestrian walkway is about 1,450 feet (442 meters), and at the far end you'll pass through Canadian customs and immigration. Have your passport ready to hand to the officer; expect a few brief questions about your visit and how long you're staying.
Pedestrian toll: about $1.00 USD / $1.25 CAD, collected when crossing into the U.S. (not charged walking into Canada). Bring coins/small bills.
Table Rock & the Horseshoe Falls Overlook ↗
This is the single best photo spot at Niagara — a straight-on view into the curve of Horseshoe Falls. Grab a coffee or snack at the Table Rock Welcome Centre and take in the view for about 20–30 minutes.
Journey Behind the Falls ↗
This attraction takes you down through tunnels to viewing portals located directly behind the sheet of falling water, plus an outdoor observation deck at its base. Budget about 45–60 minutes. Book a timed ticket online, especially on summer weekends.
Cost: about $28 CAD adult / $18.50 CAD child (3–12), which works out to roughly $20–21 USD depending on the exchange rate.

If you have extra time, the SkyWheel gives a full aerial view of both falls, or you can browse the touristy strip of Clifton Hill for a snack. Skip this stop if you're aiming for the 4-hour end of the window.

Book online for Sep 10, 2026Walk Back Across the Rainbow Bridge to the U.S.
Same walk in reverse, followed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection screening. This is usually the slower of the two crossings — allow 15–30 minutes, more on a busy summer afternoon.

Documents you need
- A valid passport, passport card, Enhanced Driver's License, or NEXUS card for every traveler.
- Children under 16 don't need a passport to enter Canada, but do need proof of citizenship such as an original birth certificate.
- If a child is traveling with only one parent, bring a notarized consent letter from the absent parent — border officers ask about this often.
- Non-U.S./non-Canadian citizens should confirm ahead of time whether they need a Canadian eTA or a U.S. visa/ESTA to re-enter.
Crossing options
- Rainbow Bridge — closest to the falls, open 24/7, pedestrians and cars.
- Whirlpool Bridge — NEXUS members only, usually much faster.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge — vehicles only, about 7 miles north, often shorter waits if driving.
During peak summer weekends, Rainbow Bridge traffic can run 30–60 minutes by car — walking is almost always faster if you've parked on one side.

📝 Other Things to Expect
- Weather & mist: Both boat tours and the falls overlooks will get you wet from spray. A light rain jacket is more comfortable than the disposable poncho provided, though ponchos are included with tickets.
- Currency: Canadian attractions charge in CAD; U.S. attractions in USD. Most vendors on both sides accept credit cards, so you don't strictly need to exchange cash, but keep a few coins/small bills for pedestrian bridge tolls.
- Cell service & data: Confirm your phone plan covers international roaming in Canada, or you may face charges once you cross — even for a short visit.
- Declaring purchases: If you buy anything in Canada, save your receipts — you may be asked to declare purchases when re-entering the U.S.
- Time zone: Both sides are in the Eastern time zone, so no adjustment needed.
- Footwear: Plan on 3–4 miles of walking total between the state park, the bridge, and the Canadian attractions. Wear comfortable shoes.
